Boston Marathon Logo & Graphics
Client: Image Impact

Background: Image Impact, a sports and corporate events coordination company, contacted Paul Kiesche Design to redesign a logo and create graphics for a line of merchandise for the Boston Marathon.

What was the challenge that Image Impact presented you with?
Image Impact was looking for both inspirational and fun designs for their 2008 line of merchandise for the Boston Marathon. A revised 2008 logo was needed, one which would remain recognizable yet still give a fresh look to the event. The graphics had to convey the theme and look of the event and go beyond the standard elements of the athletic event, as well as being recognizably symbolic of the city of Boston with its rich history and surroundings. The challenge was to approach the project to deliver the end result that the client wanted: cutting edge, interesting, and exciting illustrations which went beyond the typical event merchandise.

How did you go about meeting that challenge?
The first step of the process was to create a fresh look for the logo. Using traditional elements combined with fresh design, Paul Kiesche Design revised the existing logo. The updated logo was then used as an element in creating the other graphics.

Researching urban trends, fashion, and the Boston landscape we moved beyond a typical sports illustration. Each illustration was completely customized, which created a unique and personal look for the runners.

What inspired you on the design of this project?
We took inspiration for this event from the athletes themselves. We also wanted to convey the spirit of Boston and the rich history of the city in our designs.

How was the design implemented?
Rough drafts of the designs were presented to Image Impact followed by digital vector formatted final artwork. Upon being finalized, the artwork was delivered to a screen printer for production.

How was the project received?  What were the results?
In anticipation of higher sales, Image Impact increased the quantities of merchandise initially ordered. The new designs attracted renewed attention and surpassed expectations for the sales. Many of the designs sold out completely.  Image Impact has since contracted Paul Kiesche Design for merchandise designs for the Commerce Bank Five Boro Bike Tour in New York.
