Cliff's Homemade Ice Cream Website & Brochure
Client: Cliff's Homemade Ice Cream

Background: Cliff’s Homemade Ice Cream is a family owned frozen dessert company based in Northern New Jersey. They worked with Paul Kiesche Design as a local design firm to create an e-mail template, brochure and website for their company.

What was the challenge that Cliff’s presented you with?
Cliff’s Ice Cream has been a staple in its local community and a favorite with the residents, past and present, for over 30 years. Marketing for Cliff’s had to be as timeless and as memorable as the shop itself. The design challenge presented to us was to move the image of Cliff’s forward using the modern media communication of a website without compromising the traditional feel of the company. An emphasis on the quality of their homemade ice cream was important as was the idea of highlighting services which customers of Cliff’s may not have known about before, such as catering and cakes. A brochure was designed to support the website and to put emphasis on catering services which Cliff’s offers outside of the traditional ice cream shop.

How did you go about meeting that challenge?
Preliminary research fleshed out the initial concepts of the design: classic, positive, and appealing to families. By sticking with the original color scheme of red, white, and blue already in use on the storefront, the connection between the shop and the website was strengthened. A photography shoot was arranged to gather fresh, new and enticing photographs of both the shop and the products. Original, clever, and fun copywriting was written to strengthen the message and appeal to the audience. Following the site and brochure we created an e-mail template for Cliff’s so their online communication remains consistent with their brand.

What inspired you on the design of this project?
The theme of the project design centered on the idea of Cliff’s being an established part of the community for over thirty years. Our work for this project needed to be light-hearted without crossing into being too comedic or cliché, so we looked to the roots of the business for our inspiration. We were inspired by timeless, classic retro design, like something featured in a Norman Rockwell painting. The only other inspiration on this project was a sincere belief that Cliff’s produces fantastic homemade ice cream – we tested it ourselves!

How was the design implemented?
After the site was designed we constructed the build to be W3C compliant and search engine friendly. The site was of course built to not only look good but to work well. Also after the brochures were printed and waifer sealed they were sent out as self-mailers by the client.

How was the project received?  What were the results?
Even prior to publicizing the newly live site, Cliff’s had received orders and enquiries through the new site. There were also over fifty names added to the mailing list prior to publicity. Upon the first mailing of the brochure they had over 30 catering event inquiries within the week.
