Heartbreak Diaries
Client: Heartbreak Diaries
Awarded: Silver Award, Horizon Interactive Awards, Web Award Winner, Awards for Internet Creativity

Challenge: Heartbreak Diaries began as the story of a single girl who, in her quest to find passion and true love, experienced countless dating catastrophes. The project was intended to empower those who were frustrated with the dating scene and needed a fresh outlook. Paul Kiesche Design was sought after to develop the logo, website and a line of merchandise to sell the concept in an innovative fashion through ecommerce. Secondary objectives included creating a source of entertainment for the audience with true life stories and fun animations.

Solution: After assessing the needs of the client, Paul Kiesche Design started by illustrating the consumer products with original custom illustrations. This would define the company and help establish a look throughout the project. The Heartbreak Diaries logo was then illustrated, mimicking the product illustrations to keep a consistent brand.

The illustrations were hand drawn in ballpoint pen, then partially colored with highlighter markers, to give a doodle effect. "I just imagined a college girl in history class doodling" said Paul. The young, fun and energetic feel of each illustration kept a consistent look and brought life to the product line.

The website, www.heartbreakdiaries.com, soon followed in a similar fashion. Information architecture was used to help define the target audience, user flow, hierarchy of information, and planned for a five year expansion. Using Flash animated illustrations, a fun script font and torn paper as a backdrop, the site came to life with colors and movement. An online shopping cart is used for ecommerce purchasing. Features like blogs (diaries), a mailing list, and a "Tell a Friend" feature, helps to keep users informed and entertained.

Result: Since the launch of Heartbreak Diaries, the brand's unique illustration technique has received much attention. The style and impeccable attention to detail made this project a true crowd pleaser. The site is active with users who find humor and solace in the client's weekly diary entries. Beverly continues to market her custom made merchandise and website while receiving rave reviews and recognition for hiring the studio that brought her story to life. Paul Kiesche Design was able to break the mold by fusing the art of illustration to that of graphic design. The site is currently maintained by Paul Kiesche Design while the line of merchandising continues to grow.

The site won the Silver Award at the Horizon Interactive Awards and the Web Award at the Awards for Internet Creativity.
